Big cities present a unique set of challenges for managing temperature and residential comfort. Among these, the so-called “urban canyons” have become a growing area of interest for experts in thermoregulation and architecture. But what exactly are urban canyons, and how do they impact daily life?

What are urban canyons?

Urban canyons form when tall, narrow buildings are located close to each other, creating narrow corridors similar to natural canyons. The disproportion between built-up areas and green spaces, pollution, and the impermeabilization of soil due to paved roads and concrete structures amplify this phenomenon, which is particularly common in large cities with dense buildings and narrow streets. These characteristics cause air currents to be trapped between asphalt and buildings, preventing proper air circulation and renewal. Urban canyons can thus alter the local microclimate, significantly affecting temperature, airflow, and air quality.

Impact on temperature

One of the primary effects of urban canyons is the creation of the so-called heat island effect. Tall buildings trap the sun’s heat, preventing nighttime cooling and increasing the surrounding air temperature. This can lead to higher temperatures compared to rural or green areas, directly impacting residential comfort.

In addition to increasing temperatures, urban canyons can also affect airflow. The arrangement of buildings can create wind corridors that increase air speed (Venturi effect), causing undesirable drafts inside homes and negatively impacting thermal comfort.

Solutions for home comfort in urban canyons

In this complex context, effective thermoregulation becomes crucial for ensuring a comfortable home environment. Here are some solutions:

  1. Thermostats and programmable thermostats: thermostats allow precise control and regulation of indoor temperature, adapting to external weather conditions. Using learning algorithms like TPI or effectively communicating with heating and cooling systems via protocols like OpenTherm, these devices can optimize temperature management, reducing energy consumption and enhancing comfort.

  2. Fan-coil regulators: fan-coil regulators, such as our FAN/503S, simplify the setting and control of fan-coils, even with inverter motors. These regulators help maintain a constant and comfortable temperature, also reducing air humidity, regardless of the typical external climatic variations in urban canyons.

  3. Controlled ventilation systems: advanced solutions for controlled ventilation can be crucial for ensuring optimal air exchange in homes located in big cities. These systems not only improve indoor air quality but also help maintain a comfortable temperature by reducing humidity and preventing mold formation.

Urban canyons present unique challenges for managing temperature and home comfort, but with the right technological solutions, they can be effectively addressed.
