After having seen how to program the room thermostat<\/a>, let’s see today how to set up the boiler, again with a view to promoting energy savings.<\/p>\n

Here too, we remind you that the set temperature is one of the factors that most influence bill costs: just one Celsius degree more can increase consumption up to 10%, depending on the conditions of use.<\/p>\n

In addition to some measures to improve comfort, such as correct programming of the chronothermostat and the installation of thermostatic valves <\/a>(mandatory by law) and some structural improvements<\/a>, even more focused attention to boiler functions can help to reduce consumption and the costs.<\/p>\n

But how to do it?<\/p>\n

Turn the boiler on or off?<\/h2>\n

Contrary to popular belief, turning the boiler off completely does not bring any benefits in terms of energy savings. In fact, the boiler consumes more energy in the first ignition phase, when it has to increase the temperature of the cold water arriving from the water mains in order to operate the heating system and supply domestic hot water to the users. On the other hand, keeping the boiler on all the time, the system only has to maintain the required temperature, in circulation or in the accumulation tanks. This allows you to limit the consumption of gas or electricity, and allows the boiler to work at a minimum, also reducing the wear of the internal components which, less stressed, will last longer. This applies above all, but not only!, to boilers with flame modulation.<\/p>\n

Does that mean you have to keep the heaters on all the time? No! Just set the chronothermostat correctly<\/a> and lower the temperature by a few degrees during the night or when it is not needed.<\/p>\n

What domestic hot water temperature to set on the boiler?<\/h2>\n

Another intervention concerns the temperature of the domestic hot water. Often, in fact, domestic systems also manage this function, in addition to heating. The recommended temperature for the water needed for the bathroom, shower and kitchen is between 45\u00b0C and 55\u00b0C, also depending on the distance, and the consequent heat loss, between the boiler and the taps in question. Here, only experience can give us the solution, and it will be necessary to proceed… step by step, starting from 45\u00b0C, for example, and acting on small temperature increments on the boiler thermostat, until a comfortable temperature is obtained, when required. Furthermore, the set value can be decreased in the summer, when perhaps there is no need for hotter water for a bath or shower.<\/p>\n
